Goodreads Synopsis

In a land ruled by a murderous boy-king, each dawn brings heartache to a new family. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, is a monster. Each night he takes a new bride only to have a silk cord wrapped around her throat come morning. When sixteen-year-old Shahrzad’s dearest friend falls victim to Khalid, Shahrzad vows vengeance and volunteers to be his next bride. Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph’s reign of terror once and for all.

Night after night, Shahrzad beguiles Khalid, weaving stories that enchant, ensuring her survival, though she knows each dawn could be her last. But something she never expected begins to happen: Khalid is nothing like what she’d imagined him to be. This monster is a boy with a tormented heart. Incredibly, Shahrzad finds herself falling in love. How is this possible? It’s an unforgivable betrayal. Still, Shahrzad has come to understand all is not as it seems in this palace of marble and stone. She resolves to uncover whatever secrets lurk and, despite her love, be ready to take Khalid’s life as retribution for the many lives he’s stolen. Can their love survive this world of stories and secrets?

Review of The Young Elites

Title & Author: The Young Elites by Marie Lu20821111
Genre: YA Fantasy
Published: October 7th 2014 by G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers
Where this book came from: I own it

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Adelina lives in Kenettra, a blood fever took many lives ten years ago including her mothers. Many others were left ‘marked’ with a change in hair, skin or eye coloring. They are referred to by the people as malfettos and treated with prejudice and superstition. Some malfettos have abilities/powers and are called young elites, the Inquisition Axis hunts them because they see them as a threat to the population. One night changes Adelinas life when she realizes she is not just a malfetto with silver hair but a young elite. The Inquisition Axis blames her for her father’s murder and are about to put her to death when she is saved by Enzo. Enzo is a young elite, head of a society known as the Daggers and he wants to train Adelina. The Daggers goal is to overthrow the crown so that malfettos will no longer have to live in secret and in fear. However, a young elites powers are effected by their emotions and Adelina’s are dark and bitter so her powers become violent and difficult to control. She becomes a danger to herself and those around her.

My thoughts & reactions
The story is one of turmoil, within Adelina as well as between the Daggers and the Inquisition. I enjoyed watching the individual motives and plans unfold and entwine; in the end nothing goes as planned.
Marie Lu’s writing is smooth and fast-paced, with a poetic quality to it. While I couldn’t relate to Adelina much I really enjoyed her as a character. She offered a unique point of view, it is unclear at the end of the book if she is hero or villain, so often the main character is the hero. I enjoyed that it was darker and grittier than many other books like it. Enzo was a more relatable character for me, and I saw a little of the Darkling (Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo) in him. They seemed to share the same charming, ambitious and ruthless qualities.

I hear X-men reference when people described Marie Lu’s The Young Elites. I assume because of the powers and abilities. However I saw some character traits in common as well. Mystique of X-men is a character that is on both the good and the bad side, and I felt Enzo shared some Magneto qualities.
I also wanted to reference another story, or saying rather. An old Cherokee story tells of two wolves within each of us, one good and one bad. The one that wins is the one that we feed. I felt that this perfectly described the war within Adelina, and on top of that Enzos name for her as a young elite is white wolf. Just something to ponder.

The worst part of this book, for me, was the scene with Raffael, Adelina and the stones. They are trying to discover which ones she aligns with. This scene felt awkward to me, I can’t quite put my finger on why.
The best part, while I enjoyed the whole story, was the epilogue! It blew me away. I can’t think of another YA book I have read that dangled such interesting characters in our face right at the end. I can already tell I am going to love Maeve. Before the epilogue I wanted to read The Rose Society but now I NEED it!

November Owlcrate Unboxing

It’s here guys!

My very first Owlcrate arrived, and after I did a little jig around my kitchen – yes a jig – I dove right on in!

Here is a photo of the unboxing; this months theme was Myths & Legends

1.) A bracelet that say ‘Camp Halfblood’ made by The Colorful Geek (Not Pictured – Oops)

2.) The. Most. Amazing. Tea. Seriously I wish I could share with you how good this tea smells! It is called Sleeping Beauty and the info card says the sent out four different flavors this month. I wonder what the others are? This tea is from Adiago teas and contains  It contains honeybush, apple, peach, chamomile, marigold and creme flavors.

3.) A castle necklace from The Geeky Cauldron. It does open up but I’m not sure what I would put inside exactly.

4.) A Mermaid pocket mirror from My Clockwork Castle. Handy I suppose and very pretty but I don’t think I will get much use out of it.

5.) A Soundless bookmark

6.) Vampire Academy temporary tattoos

7.) And of course… a book! It was Soundless by Richelle Mead. I haven’t read any of her work so I am excited to give it a try and I admit I am glad this one isnt about vampires. Here is the Goodreads synopsis for Soundless

For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.
When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Fei’s home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation.
But soon Fei is awoken in the night by a searing noise, and sound becomes her weapon.
Richelle Mead takes readers on a triumphant journey from the peak of Fei’s jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiugo, where a startling truth and an unlikely romance will change her life forever.

After thoughts: I didnt love all the items but the tea and the book were so perfect that they won me over. Honestly I did expect more from this months theme. But I am taking advantage of the black friday sale and signing up for 3 more months before I make a final verdict.
